Maracuja Oil vs. Argan Oil

By now every gal and her mama is familiar with argan oil, an ingredient popularized by Josie Maran cosmetics and MoroccanOil hair products.  Blogs, magazines, hairstylists, and makeup artists alike have been touting its vast benefits for almost a year now and it's even begun to line the haircare shelves at superstore giants like Walmart, bringing argan oil to the masses!  But now there's a newcomer oil to skincare and beauty products you probably haven't heard of yet: maracuja oil.  Maracuja may just be the next argan oil!  Here's a comparison between the two:

via
Maracuja oil (AKA passion flower oil) is cold pressed in a special process from passion flowers in the Amazon, where people there have been relying on its beneficial properties for hundreds of years.  It's extremely rich in vitamin C and essential fatty acids to nourish your skin, where it's easily absorbed.  The fatty acids in the oil are also beneficial to hair as well.  Maracuja oil replenishes skin, has anti-aging benefits, and restores damaged hair.  It also has additional relaxing properties, making it great for bath products.

via
Argan oil is derived from the fruit of the Argan tree, native to Morocco, where it has also been used for hundreds of years by the locals.  It's chock full of vitamin E and carotenes, along with essential fatty acids.  It's also rich in squalene, which is thought to protect skin from free radical damage that causes skin cancer.  Argan oil has anti-aging benefits, restores damaged hair, and is also useful in treating acne.

So, which should I buy?
You can't go wrong with either!  Each oil has similar benefits and the pure oil is priced about the same; Josie Maran sells pure argan oil at $48 for 1.7 oz., while Tarte sells pure maracuja oil at $46 for the same size.  Beauty products featuring argan oil are, of course, easier to find, but Tarte is beginning to formulate products with maracuja oil (in keeping with their new Amazonian clay discoveries, you see).  I've tried their brand new maracuja oil concealer and so far, I'm impressed!  I can't wait to see more products that feature this oil (lipstick, maybe? tinted moisturizer?).

What do you think?  Could maracuja oil possibly compete with the now-commercialized argan oil?  Are you an argan oil devotee?  Would you be willing to give maracuja oil a try?

  1. You can get pure argan oil at Mountain Rose Herbs for much, much less! It's $17 for 4 full ounces!! And it's organic. :) Just a heads up!

  3. I prefer the Maracuja Oil for my face & the Argan Oil for my hair & body. I've seen amazing results using Maracuja Oil as my night time moisturizer. My skin is brighter, less oily, more even and it has softened very fine lines around my eyes. I wish I could find them cheaper and in larger sizes, as Josie Maran's Super Size 4 oz bottle is over $90. I highly recommend maracuja oil to everyone, every skin type, amazing stuff!

    1. Maracuja oil is also known as passion fruit oil. You are paying the high prices to have Tarte's name on the bottle. You can order the exact same product - cold-pressed, organic maracuja (passion fruit) oil from Natural Bliss at much lower costs! A 4 ounce bottle is $20, an 8 ounce bottle is only $35 - and that's economical enough that you can use it on the rest of your body and not just your face. (They even sell an enormous 16 ounce one for $60.) I don't work for Natural Bliss, I'm just a customer who wants organic, high-quality products at a cheaper price than the designer brands are willing to part with them for! If you're unsure about taking the risk, Natural Bliss has passion fruit oil for $7 for 1 ounce, so you can try it without worrying about the cost. I hope this helps you get the beauty product you want at a lower price! If you search online, you can read other customers reviews of this oil from Natural Bliss.

  4. The oil has the capacity to help in eliminating scars from the skin including stretch marks, a common problem of women. It nourishes the skin and allows broken tissues and cells to be repaired and renewed. Thus, it paves the way for the appearance of a new skin that is similar to that of the original skin of the individual.

  5. I have psoriasis and live in Colorado.. this winter has been abnormally horrible on my skin so I tried the small bottle of JM Argan oil and ordered Tarte's maracuja oil from QVC. I started with the argan oil, not very impressed. I felt like no matter what I did it just sat on my face and didn't sink in at all. Tried it for 2 weeks, not impressed. After receiving the Tarte maracuja oil in the mail, I tried it immediately. I noticed immediately that it sank into my skin more than the argan oil. More pleasant smell as well. After 2 nights, my patchy areas of psoriasis on my chin were gone. With continued use, my natural moisture reserves seem to be coming back bit by bit. I looked at some comparisons online and it seems as though maracuja oil is better received for facial use.

    2. I have the Argan oil and used it on my face. I started to break out day after I used it. Thought it might be coincidence so waited awhile and then tried it again. Same thing! Now I just put a couple of drops in with my moisturizing lotion and use on my legs and arms and shoulders and have no problems using it there. Am thinking of ordering the maracuja oil and trying that on my face.

  7. The Maracuja oil came in a Tarte package from QVC and I let it sit for weeks before i tried it myself-My daughter has very dry skin and eczema. Lotions just seem to evaporate on her skin. I put the maracuja oil on her skin last night just trying it and the next day I could tell the difference in her skin--Wow! This stuff is expensive but works

  9. Just purchased my first bottle of the Tarte Maracuja Oil. I appreciate everyone's comments. I'm curious to know if anyone has tried either oil on their scalp. I have psoriasis resulting in thinning hair and wonder if one or the other oil might help.

    1. i have dealt with dermatitis on my scalp for years (I know its not psoriasis). Just this year I bought Skin Biology's Folligen and have been using for months with excellent results. I dealt with so much anxiety before this due to the hair loss it would cause. My hair is not thick to begin with so I didn't have much to work with on how much I could lose before others noticed. Copper peptides are healing to the skin and it cleared the dermatitis up in a few days! I started at full strength for the first few days and then had to start diluting it with purified water because it was too strong, to where i am now down to a 1/6 (ish) ratio. The hair loss stopped in the first day or two of using it. I rinse out any hair products an hour before bed and let my hair air dry. I use a squeeze bottle with a skinny tip (I used an emu oil bottle I got from brokenwingmending on ebay - so you can see what type bottle) and distribute it, massage it in, wait for it to dry a bit (it is a watery liquid) and wash my hair in the morning. I highly recommend trying it. Nothing else worked for me like this does. Every shampoo was too harsh. I used raw apple cider vinegar followed by dowsing my scalp with jojoba oil to add moisture back in...but I got tired of my hair stinking like vinegar. I love folligen and dr mercola's shampoo and conditioner. I hope you see this... and it works.

  10. I have used both. Both are good. I perfer Josie Marans Argan oil over Maracuja oil though. The Maracuja oil just a bit oiler to me.

  11. I recieved some of the Tarte Marcuja oil as a free gift while in Ulta. I purchased some other product for firming my skin, especially under my neckline. I tried the Marcuja one night and could not believe the instant results. I have tried Strivectin for necks as well, and it didn't come close to the results I got with teh Marcuja. My face is firmer, more hydrated and has a healthy glow! I will be 54 in December, and after a few days of using this product had 3 different people think I was much younger than that and act genuinely surprised when learning my real age. Worth the money!

  12. So I've been a makeup artist for 11 years, have very dry skin and developed high sensitivity/ allergy reaction to my cosmetics & skincare. I'm currently in school for esthetics so I can really understand the make up of skin and what hollistic/ natural products are good for what...To make a long story short my face is constantly dry, itchy, flaking, red, inflamed. Nothing I tried was working. So I use Prima Fluer skincare (natural hollistc line) so far so good. And i just tried the Tarte brand... I got the Maracuja oil (amazing) all dry patches gone, skin smooth & supple! I love it. I also got the Amazonian Clay Foundation by Tarte, Mineral Veil by Bare Minerals, Blush by Tarte (blissful), and the illuminator with Argan Oil by Jossie Maran. Great combo. My skin looks & feels wonderful. Natural, glowing, healthy skin. I couldnt be happier!!!!

    1. I recommend Paula Begoun's website Beautypedia and check for chemical ingredients, parabens, sodium laurel sulfate free, etc. Environmental Working Group had a searchable database for cosmetic ingredients, but you can search with a search engine and still get the results of ingredients' safety and hazards. A lot of mineral makeup contains bismuth oxychloride which is a bi-product of lead and copper refining which causes irritation to those with sensitive and acne prone skin. There are many brands which do not contain chemicals and are very reasonably priced.

  14. I bought some Tarte maracuja oil after reading an article about it. Previously, I had used argan oil for about 2 years. Although the argan oil is wonderful, IMHO, the marcuja oil is far superior. It sinks in completely in a short amount of time, you only need a very smal amount, and my face looked so smooth in the morning after its use. Much better than my long hair being covered by oil the next morning as it is with argan oil.

  17. I bought Izadora's Maracuja oil for only $20 on eBay for 2 Oz. It's not expensive at all! You don't need to pay more than double for Tarte's name. I only used it once so far but I can see instant results. I will be trying out Argan oil too but most likely on my hair

  18. Both Tarte and Josie pride themselves on harvesting their oils in a sustainable way and pay fair wages to those who harvest and extract the oils. This is why they cost more.

  19. By far the best natural, unprocessed, fair trade and skin loving oils I've found (and I've tried too many to count) are from Shea Terra Organics. You'll find oils you never knew were out there and the results are amazing! I went from being a botox babe to au naturel, and no one guesses I'm 49! I'm a truly satisfied customer, not a paid endorser!

  20. Im an avid fan of argan oil for the face. In harsh Winters, my skin becomes quite chapped and irritated - around the nose and mouth included. I found argan oil normalised my skin, and was hydrating enough that I didn't need to use a tonne for it to be effective. For those who need extra hydration, this oil will give you that. Argan oil never broke me out, and by all accounts it is completely non-comedogenic.

The vitamin C contained in maracuja is not great for photosensitivity in UV light, so is better used in night time skin care. Argan being heavier likewise might also be too much for day wear due to its slower absorbency - however using it sparingly alleviates this problem.

Maracuja is said to aid acne prone and problematic skins. On the same token, if your skin is prone to the odd break-out but is also dehydrated/aging, you will find that argan will balance your complexion.

It really does depend on what youre looking for. Younger skin types might benefit more from maracuja, which may also be more appropriate for use in the Summer months. Aging/dehydrated skin types may benefit more from argan which likewise is more beneficial in Winter.

That said, argan and maracuja oils are said to perform very similarly, with almost identical skin benefits. The only difference I can detect is the consistency (maracuja being "thinner" or more quickly absorbed) and that maracuja has the addition of vitamin c, which brightens dull skin.
